Every page can now read itself aloud

A new button reads each page aloud in the visitor’s own language, lighting each word as it goes.

The accessibility panel, with Listen to this page at the top

Some visitors find reading on a screen tiring. Some are learning English. Some simply prefer to listen.

Every website we build now has a round speaker button at the top of each page. Press it, and the page is read aloud in the visitor’s own browser voice, in the language of the page. The passage being read is lit softly, and where the device allows, each word is lit as it is spoken.

It costs nothing to use, needs no setting up, and sends nothing anywhere: the reading happens on the visitor’s own device. On a phone, where the header has no room, it is the first choice in the accessibility panel.

It sits alongside the other options in that panel: larger text, wider spacing, an easy-read font, high contrast, and a switch that stops things moving.
